Prosthetics
A prosthesis consists of 4 basic parts for a below the knee, and 5 basic parts for an above the knee. For instance, a C-Leg knee alone is not a prosthesis, but only a part of a prosthesis. The complete prosthesis would consist of:

• Socket: where your residual limb goes into (actually made by the prosthetist)
• Suspension: a mechanism that keeps the prosthesis attached to your leg
• Pylon: attaches the socket to the foot
• Foot: the type of feet vary depending on activity level of the individual (see our transtibial section for additional information)
• Knee: only for above the knee patients. For example, someone with a below the knee amputation will not need a C-Leg. Knee selection depends on the patient's activity level (see our Transfemoral section for additional information).
The best way to ensure that you get the care you require is to be fully informed about your situation and the technology available.
